Family Get-together, 1992

Art installation at the urban space Rüsselsheim

Family Gathering was initially based on the idea of taking a pictogram designed by a group of Danish architects and placing it in public space. The family, consisting of two adults, two children, and a dog, is presented as the ideal family. It mingles among the pedestrians in a public space: equal in status — 1.80 metres (5-foot-8-inches) tall, but stylistically simplified and painted in a single colour.

In Rüsselsheim, the city of cars that is home to a great many people of various origins, it places everyone on the same level. Family Gathering projects a kind of life that is to be found everywhere in the town. It reduces it to a basic principle without making any value judgment.

In 2017, the Rüsselsheim Lower Monument Protection Authority rejects an application by housing company Gewobau to erect a multicultural "Hörl Family" in the vicinity of Nazi artist Emil Hub's Adam Opel statue on the grounds that it is "non-tolerable". Read the complete blog entry.
